Doug Church garners national award

Doug Church

Longtime GRIN swimmer Doug Church was named the  2012 Ransom Arthur award winner this weekend. The award was announced Friday, April 27 at the USMS Short Course National Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Doug was named the winner for his volunteer work in both USMS and the Indianapolis area. Doug, of course, founded the world-famous NASTI swim team, helped initiate the building of the Fishers YMCA and helped save the beautiful Olympic-sized Forest Park Aquatic Center in Noblesville.

Doug also has been a GRIN board member and serves as the attorney for the USMS board of directors. He chairs the Swimming Saves Lives foundation, an emerging USMS initiative to teach adults to swim.

According to USMS, “This award is given in honor of Captain Ransom J. Arthur, M.D., who, by his sacrifice, perseverance, and dedication to improving the health of adults through swimming, established the Masters Swimming program in the United States. The award is given annually to the USMS registered person who has done the most to further the objectives of Masters swimming.”

Indy Aquatic Masters coach Mel Goldstein nominated Doug for the honor. Mel won the award in 1997. With the help of Doug’s NASTI teammates and Mel’s teammates, the GRIN board presented the nomination to USMS. He will be honored at the annual convention in September, also in Greensboro.
