Goldstein inducted into Hall of Fame

Congratulations to longtime Indy Aquatic Masters swimming coach Mel Goldstein on being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Mel will be among seven nominees inducted Sept. 14 at the United States Masters Swimming convention in Greensboro, NC. The class includes four swimmers, two divers and one contributor from three countries, the United States, Germany and Russia.

Mel has a long history both in serving the national USMS organization and with growing masters swimming in Indiana. He served on the first FINA Masters Congress in 1994 in Montreal and in the 2nd Congress in Sheffield, England. Both efforts sought to promote International Masters swimming competition. The first FINA International Masters Swimming Championships were held in 1989 in Indianapolis. In time, FINA took over the Masters World Championships, which became known as the FINA Masters World Championships.

Mel has  served as Secretary and President of USMS. During this time he served as the meet director of various national and international competitions.  Through Mel’s tenacity and connections, Indy Aquatic Masters will host the USMS Short Course National Championships at the Nat in May 2013. Mel also has led efforts to bring short course nationals here in 2004 and long course nationals in 2009 — an incredible coup for Indiana.

He also is the first USMS representative to serve as an officer of United States Aquatic Sports, the National Governing Body for all United States Aquatic Sports, which is responsible to FINA, as their Treasurer.

He re wrote the Masters Section in “Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving” and co-wrote “Swimming Past 50”, a must read for masters swimmers everywhere.
