Bill Roach named to senior level USMS safety position

BillRoachBill Roach, a long-time GRIN and NASTI swimmer, has been named to a senior level open water safety position within United States Masters Swimming.

Roach will be the organization’s first Open Water Compliance Coordinator, and he will  be charged with reviewing all USMS open water event safety plans before sanctions are issued. Bill already serves as GRIN’s safety director.

“Congratulations, Bill, for being selected for this position and thank you for your continued support and services to USMS and to GRIN!” said GRIN Chair Jim Barber. ” In the short time you have been associated with USMS and (GRIN), you have already brought a tremendous amount of value to Masters swimming with your insight to safety and we look forward to you taking your efforts to a national level so all can benefit.”

Roach has been the Safety Director for four USMS Open Water National Championships – two 25K, one 10K and one 5K at Morse Lake in Noblesville, IN.

He has been a certified Safety Director and Safety Director Trainer for almost 20 years with the US Water Ski Association. He has served as the Chief Safety Director for over 60 water ski tournaments, including the World Police and Fire Games and the Disabled Water Ski Nationals.

Billl recently retired as a High School PE teacher, aquatics director, department head, Red Cross lifeguard trainer and swim coach.

He has been a long-time member of the Indiana Water Ski Association, serving as president for three years.

He also is a member of the USMS Open Water Committee, the Open Water Safety Sub Committee and Chair of the Open Water Officials Sub Committee.
