Big Shoulders offers a rare smooth ride

Many Hoosier swimmers braved the 23rd annual Big Shoulders classic open water swim Saturday, Sept. 7, along Chicago’s beautiful Ohio Street beach.

bigshouldersUnlike the past several years, the weather was clear, the water was smooth and warm. As always, Chicago Masters did an excellent job hosting the 5K and 2.5K swim.

Several Indiana swimmers were among the top finishers. Adam Dawkins, 38, a past champion, placed second with a 59:43 in the 5K. Adam swims for Southwest Indiana Masters. He was defeated by 19-year-old Jordy Wilimovsky by one minute.

GRIN Chairman Jim Barber, 53,  placed seventh overall with a solid time of 1:03.15.

Other notable finishers include Todd Dawkins, 40, in 22nd place with a 1:07.04. He’s Adam’s brother, and swims for Indy Aquatic Masters. Victoria Rian, 47, of NASTI, came in just after Todd in 23rd place at 1:07.08. Jeff Ostermann, 35, was 26th at 1:07.33 and Susie Shuck, 47, Southeastern Area Masters, was 31st.
