Cole Family YMCA Celebrates the 30th Year Hosting the Spring Fever Invitational!

On Saturday, March 12, 2016, the Cole YMCA Masters held their annual Spring Fever Masters Invitational at the Cole Center Family YMCA in Kendallville, IN – for the 30th time! Here is the meet recap from Head Coach Cindy Miller:

In our 30th year for the Spring Fever Invitational Masters Meet, we had some fast swims, good fellowship and, as usual, great volunteers.  Before the meet started, we broke for a moment of silence over the loss of one of our long time swimmers, Deb Stoner, who succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer. Her daily swimming regiment was what kept her going and an inspiration to us until just recently. We’ll always remember her kicking endurance as she swam 2 miles every day most of her life.

This year’s meet featured 38 swimmers from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Teams represented at the meet included Duneland Masters, Elkhart Y/Concord Masters, Fort Wayne Y Sharks, Indy Aquatic Masters, Michiana Y Masters, and the Water Buffaloes. See pictures of our competitors below.

During the meet, there were 5 Indiana Masters State records and 2 National records set by Dave Costill (Muncie, IN). Dave now holds the National and State records in the 50 Breast (M 80-84; 37.74) and the 200 Breast (M 80-84; 3:09.84). In fact, Dave has held numerous National and State records in his career. We were excited to have Dave at our meet. He is quite an inspiration to all of us.

Records were also broken by Jeff Ostermann (Fort Wayne, IN). We can always count on Jeff to make our meets exciting. He’s always chasing records – and usually obtaining them! He now has the new State Record in the 200 Back (M 35-39; 2:00.39). Erica Smith (Greenwood, IN) also tied her own State Record for the 50 Fly (W 25-29) with a time of 26.05. And, just for good measure, Dave Costill broke another record in the 50 Back (M 80-84) with a 35.44!

The Noodle Relay finished out the meet with the winning team of Eric Ellingson, Dave Larsen, Linda Marvin, James Bartlett, and Rachel Fuelling. They beat four other teams swimming with noodles. Good food and the meet video rounded out a great day of swimming. Thanks to all of our volunteers and our meet official, Jim Simons (Angola, IN), for a great meet! We would also like to thank the Kendallville McDonald’s for supplying the buns, Orange Hi-C, and cups every year for the dinner we host after the meet.

See you all next year!
