This year’s championship meet was held on May 7 – 8 at the Vigo County School Corporation Aquatic Center in Terre Haute. Over two days of racing, new friends were made and old acquaintances renewed. And, with 105 swimmers in attendance ranging in age from 18 to 83, the meet promised fierce competition, an amazing venue, and fast water – and the competitors certainly delivered! Congratulations go out to Indy Aquatic Masters and the Noblesville Adult Swim for winning the Large Team and Small Team Divisions at the 2016 GRIN Short Course State Championships respectively!
All told, there were 26 new GRIN State Records set during the 2-day event. New record holders include: Mark Ahonen (M 50-54 – 25 Fly and 25 Breast), Barbara Bolda (W 50-54 – 25 Breast), Meg Carlson (W 30-34 – 25 Breast), Rick Chamberlain (M 60-64 – 25 Fly), Brian Cummings (M 55-59 – 25 Fly), Joseph Frey (M 18-24 – 25 Back), Cheryl Gettelfinger (W 55-59 – 25 Breast), Steve Julian (M 50-54 – 25 Back), Ed Keefe (M 75-79 – 25 Back), Tracy Knight (W 40-44 – 25 Breast), Ginny Kubek (W 65-69 – 25 Fly), Denny Mattingly (M 60-64 – 25 Breast), George Quigley (M 75-79 – 25 Fly and 25 Breast), Julie Radtke (W 40-44 – 25 Free)¸ Matthew Schulstad (M 18-24 – 25 Fly), Dick Smith (M 70-74 – 1650 Free), Erica Smith (W 25-29 – 50 Fly, 100 Fly, 100 Free, and 100 IM), Haley Tisdale (W 18-24 – 25 Fly), Kendrick Vester (M 18-24 – 25 Free), and Bruce Young (M 55-59 – 25 Free).
GRIN relays were also highly competitive. Setting a new GRIN record for the Mixed 25+ 800 Free Relay were Charlie Geist, Kari Peglar, Stephen Rouch, and Erica Smith with Indy Aquatic Masters.
In addition to new State records and a multitude of personal best swims, GRIN also had a number of swimmers making their competitive Masters debut.
