NASTI Announces the 2011 Noblesville Brewfest

Forest Park Aquatic Center and the NASTI Masters (Noblesville Adult Swim Team Inc.) have announced the 2011 Noblesville Brewfest as a fundraiser for the Forest Park Pool.

The event will  once again be held at the Moose Lodge, 950 Field Drive in Noblesville, IN, on September 24 from 3:00-7:00 PM.  Last year’s inaugural event drew a great crowd of thirsty beer fans, and the lineup for this year is better than ever! There will be lots of fun, prizes, a live band, a silent auction, and of course dozens of beers to sample for free. All participants will recieve a commemorative sampling glass, while supplies last.

Advance sale tickets are available now for $20.00 each and can be purchased at the Forest Park Pool office, or at one of the Vintage Spirits stores in Noblesville.  Tickets the day of the event will be $25.00 each.  All proceeds will go to The Forest Park Aquatic  Center.  You can also visit the website, check us out on Facebook or download a flyer for the event.

GRIN State Meet

The 2011 GRIN State Championships were held over the weekend and here are the preliminary results.

The slate of officers was approved by the membership present and voting affirmatively.  Randy gave his usual, succinct financial report.  Ivan Chalfie received the Emeritus award, while Jeff Halbert and Susie Shuck shared the Strong Swimmer award.  And we really surprised Steve Jones with the Irv Merritt Award.  A very special thanks to Cheryl for providing all of the logistical support, and to Mel for a great meet!

Finally, I appreciate the network of GRIN volunteers that keep the organization going.  Thanks so much!

Dick Smith

Steve Jones - Irv Merritt award

Ivan Chalfie - Emeritus

Halbert and Shuck - Strong Swimmer Award

Congrats to all of you!

Fireman fights cancer with water, not fire

Mike receives a massage from fellow swimmer and professional massage therapist Susan Herner during one of his breaks.

Fireman Mike Young is used to fighting fires with water, but this year, on his 42nd birthday, this fireman fought cancer with water.  He waged his battle by swimming a long distance swim fundraiser and named it the Aquathon.

Like daughter, like father?

By Byron Haflich

Five summers years ago, I was informed by my wife that our family was to contribute about 12 volunteer hours to help time at an out door swim meet in Noblesville.  My first question was, “Why?” and she answered that our then 10-year-old daughter, Holly, was swimming in the meet.  My second question was, “When did she start swimming in meets?”

Fast forward to today.  I enjoy the endless picking up and dropping off of kids at swim practice, now three with Holly, Kyle and Brooke plus their friends.  I enjoy the endless hours of officiating swim meets.  I enjoy the endless laps, (maybe not so endless, but could be more) of swimming, competing and socializing with the Noblesville Adult Swim Team (NASTI’s) at the indoor Noblesville High School pool, the outdoor Forest Park Aquatic Center, open water swimming at Morse Reservoir and anywhere else where two or more NASTI’s gather.

by Kevin Sherman

Kevin Sherman

Last August five swimmers from the Indianapolis area (Victoria Rian, Jan Johnson, Tina Oaks, Jim Barber and Kevin Sherman) participated in the 22nd annual Swim Across The Sound 25K held in Bridgeport, CT. The annual swim sponsored by St. Vincent’s Foundation rose over $350,000 dollars. Proceeds of the event help the under privileged with the financial burden associated with a cancer diagnosis.

Welklin will be missed

by Dan Welklin

Bob Welklin

My dad, Bob Welklin, 84, passed away this fall after several months battling pancreatic cancer. He was a respected member of the NASTI swim team and received Grin’s Life Member Emeritus award in 2006. He loved the NASTI team and looked forward to the Indiana USMS state meet each year from which he returned most times with a cache of gold hardware. His friends and family in Fort Wayne, Indiana were very familiar with our annual event as his stories of competing and socializing were told and retold with righteous pride.

If you make me a promise, I will tell you a short story about our last state meet he attended in April of 2009. Continue reading
