GRIN’s Annual Awards

Each year, Greater Indiana Masters Swimming recognizes those GRIN members who have made outstanding contributions to Masters swimming in Indiana – both in and out of the pool. The Annual Awards given are as follows:

GRIN Emeritus AwardWhen one of our fellow Hoosier swimmers reaches octogenarian status, he or she receives the designation of GRIN Member Emeritus. In addition to a beautiful plaque, the swimmer enjoys the benefit of free-USMS dues, sponsored by GRIN, for the remainder or his/her lifetime!

Irv Merritt Award – Irv Merritt was a regular participant at Masters swimming competitions and also a competitive distance runner. He was a joy to visit with and always had an interest in the people with whom he competed. At the time of his death, Irv´s family established an annual award in his memory to be presented to an Indiana Masters swimmer who exemplified the standards and values embodied in the life of Irv Merritt.

Strong Swimmer Award – Originally called, “Going the Extra Yard” award, the Strong Swimmer Award was renamed in honor of the first recipient, Doug Strong. This award is based on total points earned by swimming long distance and difficult events in GRIN sanctioned or recognized meets. Those events earning points are: 400/500 Free, 800/1000 Free, 1500/1650 Free, 200 Fly, and 400 IM.

Super Volunteer Award –  The Super Volunteer Award was created by the GRIN Board in 2016 to recognize the outstanding efforts of the volunteers who help GRIN succeed. As a volunteer-led organization, those honored here have gone above and beyond the call of duty in working for the betterment of Greater Indiana Masters Swimming.
